In Quebec, over 2,000 young people each year reach adulthood while still under the care of the youth protection system (DPJ). These young individuals face a brutal and complex transition to independence on their 18th birthday, often without family or community support. It is to address this gap that The Riot Foundation created Riot Homes.
A Riot Home is a place of trust, hope, and support for young adults transitioning to independent living. It is not a shelter, but a space where conviviality, safety, and support are at the heart of the experience, allowing these young people to rebuild, prepare for independence, and, most importantly, receive continuous and personalized guidance during the crucial year leading up to their 18th birthday—a pivotal time for their future.
One in three young people who leave the youth protection system (DPJ) at adulthood experience homelessness in the months following their departure, and 36.6% of these individuals face prolonged homelessness.
Additionally, these young people are ten times more likely to seek help for mental health issues and have 40 times more chances of experiencing difficulties related to poverty and a lack of emotional support.
The stakes are high: at 21, only 37% of young people who leave the DPJ graduate from high school, compared to 86% of their peers who are not involved in the system. These statistics highlight how crucial it is to support these young people proactively before, during, and after their transition.
A Riot Home is a supportive space where every young person can access the resources they need to build a solid foundation for their future.
It is a springboard toward autonomy—an environment where trust and safety prevail, much like within a true family.
Within this caring and nurturing setting, our youth can take their first steps toward a well-prepared and confident adult life.
We firmly believe that every young person has the potential to thrive—no matter their past.
Our vision is of a future where every individual leaving youth protection not only survives but flourishes. A future where, through personalized support and a safe environment, these young people find the keys to fully take their place in society—with confidence and autonomy.
We see the transition into adulthood as an ongoing journey that deserves real support. Every young person can build a stable and positive future when they have access to the right tools and resources.
The Riot Homes offer a concrete solution to support young people in their transition journey.
These living spaces are thoughtfully designed to meet the unique needs of each individual.
In addition to providing a safe and welcoming environment, Riot Houses offer personalized services—from financial management to personal development, education, and the acquisition of practical life skills for adulthood.
We believe that this model of support, grounded in trust and preparation, empowers young people to better face the challenges that arise once they leave the youth protection system.
By supporting them during this critical phase of their lives, we give them the best possible chance to successfully transition into independence—and to begin a new chapter of their lives with confidence.
